- The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre
Join us at The Sill: National Landscape Discovery centre for a free talk on the lives of up to 750 men, women and children who lived on site during the construction of the reservoir 130 years ago.
The talk will introduce the reasons for and how the reservoir was constructed. It will also discuss the living conditions and social scene enjoyed by the workers and in some cases, their families. As well as the huge impact it had on the Upper Redesdale Valley.
We will cover the water supply to Newcastle and Gateshead in 1890 and the planning process and various stages of the reservoir’s construction.Following this we will explore the social aspect; such as schooling, wages, crime, religion and the ‘Catcleugh’ memorial window before finishing with the restoration of the sole remaining in-situ hut.
