To celebrate National Parks Week on the 27th – 29th July we are again turning our site at Walltown, which enjoys spectacular views of the Whin Sill Crags and easy access to Hadrian’s Wall, into a giant playground. And we are making it easier and cheaper than ever to Get Stuck In.

What's happening

With our wristband deal you can Get Stuck In and try a huge range of activities:

We’ve designed our activities to be suitable for all ages to do together, but as some younger children may not manage all the activities, under fives go free with a paying group or paying adult.

Meet the Ancestors

Make a throwing arrow with Wild Dog Outdoors, the living history experts in Northumberland. They will even help you test it to see if it works!

With Albion Outdoors you’ll be able to receive expert archery tuition and have a go at hitting the targets with 10 arrows

Potted History

Renowned potter Graham Taylor will demonstrate traditional ways of working with clay then help you make your own prehistoric pot.

Weaving and Spinning

Ruth from Textiles Through Time will give participants the pleasure of creating their own textiles and a real appreciation of the value of fabric and clothing to the people of past ages.

Potion making

We hope you won’t need it but potion-maker Davina Hopkinson will be showing you how to make a first aid kit from stuff that grows in your garden, (28th & 29th only).

You’ll be wearing your personalised leather bracelet with pride after expert teaching from Andy Bates

Climbing wall

Can you scale new heights on our climbing wall?

Small creatures

Meet and learn about lizards and other small animals from Kirkley Zoological Gardens

Hear renown storyteller Taffy Thomas bring stories and tales to life.

Learn exciting new outdoor skills with our rangers.

Learn about the ancient art of stonewalling (more to it that meets the eye).

The Opening of The Sill

On the 29th July we will also be celebrating the grand opening of The Sill, our fantastic new visitor attraction.

Getting there

Walltown is a former quarry which is now a National Park recreation site with a lake, easy-access paths, a pond and waymarked trails. It is one of the best places to see and get close to Hadrian’s Wall, which can be reached via an approximate 10min walk from the car park (parking charged for).

O.S. Grid Reference: NY 669659.

Address:  Walltown Quarry Country Park, National Park car park, Greenhead, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, CA8 7JD.

Car parking

The usual car parking charge applies both at Walltown and the Sill. For those who know the site at Walltown, there is overspill car parking available with attendants to guide and collect money. No parking in the Roman Army Museum car park.

This year National Parks Week runs from 24th to 30th July and the theme is  ‘Doing it Together’. If you want to know what is going on in all the National Parks in Britain click here.
