Eco Printing and Oak Gall Ink

Event date:
10th September 2022
The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre

A fascinating workshop with North East Wilds learning how to create your own botanical eco prints on silks, cotton, and paper. In this outdoor woodland workshop, you will learn all about the printing process involved, how to prepare fabrics for printing and how to choose the leaves that will give good prints. You’ll also be guided through the process of making oak gall ink and end the day with some experimental oak-gall ink drawing.

In this workshop, which is suitable for all abilities, the freshly collected leaves will be wrapped in silk, cotton, and paper before being steamed to release their natural dyes and tannins in an eco-friendly process. You’ll come away with some beautiful and delicately printed fabric and paper samples perfect for craft projects, as well as a printed cotton bag and vial of rich, warm-toned oak gall ink.

While we get busy crafting, lunch will be prepared on the campfire, along with teas and coffees and surrounding us will be the incredible, restorative landscapes of the National Park.

Led by experienced crafts people you'll be in good, welcoming hands, and come away feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and with a some beautiful, nature inspired crafts.

All the materials you will need will be provided for.

We will be working in The Sill Woodland so have access to all of The Sill’s facilities, but please wear clothing and footwear suitable for an outdoor environment.
