"The geographic centre of Britain"

The pretty, small town of Haltwhistle is just south of Northumberland National Park. It claims to be the geographic centre of Britain, and is certainly a great location from which to explore Hadrian’s Wall.

In Haltwhistle, you will find a charming family-friendly watch and clock museum. Based on the children’s book ‘Mr George the Clock Man’ there are displays of antique clocks. Worth a second glance.

Just outside of the town you can visit the Roman Army Museum; Carvoran. A 3D film and three galleries packed with objects from the daily life of a Roman soldier. The museum is next to a section of Hadrian’s wall.

History

The town has existed since Roman times. The Church of the Holy Cross was built in the 13th century, with views over the river and the valley.

Haltwhistle Burn

In the 18th century, the town became a centre for weaving. Its position on the main Newcastle to Carlisle road and the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway line, joining both sides of England, helped it thrive. A bypass in 1997 means tranquillity has been restored.
