Chew Green

Chew Green is the site of a large Roman encampment, located about 9 miles west of Alwinton.

The site is very close with the border with Scotland. Following archaeological excavations in the 1930s complex including a Roman fort, two fortlets, two camps were identified. The largest structure, enclosing an area of 17 acres was surrounded by defensive ramparts and ditches.

Chew Green was next to Dere Street, the Roman road which ran from York (Eboracum) to Hadrian’s Wall and beyond into Scotland.  The site is within the Otterburn Military Training Area and is a Scheduled monument.
