Explore our Dark Sky Park

Northumberland National Park forms part of the Northumberland Dark Sky Park (NIDSP) area which was awarded gold tier designation by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) in 2013.

The Development Management team aims to work closely with applicants and developers in order to ensure that any external lighting installed in connection with both existing and new development is appropriate within the context of the Dark Sky Park. They also provide advice as part of pre-application discussions or through the planning application process.

The Authority has also put together a ‘Good Practice Guide’ for Outside Lighting’ which provides advice on the appropriate design and specification of external lighting within the Dark Sky Park.
