Step by step route

From Falstone Old School Tea Rooms

From Falstone Old School Tea Rooms, turn to face the Blackcock Inn and turn left up the road, past St. Peter’s Church which is on your right. Go under the old railway bridge and turn left.

After 50 metres

After 50 metres, turn right by a field gate and follow the waymarker sign across the field and up the hill to a stone wall, keeping the Falstone Burn on your left.

At the stone wall cross the stile into the forest

At the stone wall cross the stile into the forest, and follow the waymarker to the right, keeping the Falstone Burn on your left and the wall on your right. Cross the old stone clapper bridge, and keep following the waymarkers through the forest.

Go over the timber footbridge

Go over the timber footbridge and bear left through the break in the wall and continue following the waymarkers through the forest, keeping the Falstone Burn gorge on your left.

Continue to follow the waymarkers

Continue to follow the waymarkers along a green forest drive which emerges at a clearing, and then bear left following a forest road.

Turn left at the junction with the forest road

Turn left at the junction with the forest road crossing the Falstone Burn. Away to the north on the horizon you can see Deadwater Fell. Follow the sandy road for about 1/2 mile to a waymarker sign where a track crosses the forest road.

Take the indistinct left track

Take the indistinct left track still following the waymarkers, this is the ‘Alternative Pennine Way’. Head downhill keeping the trees on your left and a small enclosed field on your right, taking care as the track can be boggy in places. The track joins a more distinct lane, with another plantation of native trees on your right enclosed by a high protective deer fence.

At the lane turn left

At the lane turn left, keep following the waymarker, and go over the cattle grid. As you skirt round Hawkhope Hill, Falstone and the North Tyne valley come into view. Follow the lane downhill to join a tarmac road. Turn left along the road, then right to go under the old railway bridge and back to Falstone Old School Tea Rooms.
