Alnham Church, Northumberland

A most wonderful walk in wild , wide open spaces, where there are stories from tragic events to be told.

This is a circular route from St Michael’s church in Alnham. It offers spectacular views over an historic landscape and visits two memorials to tragic events. We follow Salter’s Road, an ancient droving route, before traversing across access land to visit the Shepherds’ Cairn. On the way we pass close to the sites of ancient settlements and farmsteads.

Climbing from the cairn up to High Knowes we continue over to Cobden and then contour around the upland terrain to Nellie Heron’s memorial stone. Before returning to Alnham via Salters Road we ascend Hart Law for more outstanding views including over the former medieval village of Leafield Edge.

Dress for changeable weather and wear suitable footwear. Bring a packed lunch, snacks and a drink for the break.

Dogs are not permitted at this event.
