Northumberland National Park is an amazing place to walk. Our popular ‘Introduction to Navigation’ training courses have helped people to develop the basic skills and confidence to go out and explore more on foot!
The need to navigate in poor visibility might, however, occur when you least expect it – or perhaps you are planning to explore Northumberland’s Dark Sky Park on a night-time walk.
Our introductory day covers the skills and techniques that come into their own in poor visibility. This additional session offers an opportunity to learn more about using them in the dark and practice them in more realistic conditions. When poor visibility becomes a challenge, knowing how to plan for it and follow a structured approach can in some circumstances be a life saver.
If you’ve done one of our introductory days or already feel comfortable with practical navigation, including bearings and pacing, this session is for you.
Please dress for changeable weather. It is essential you bring a packed meal, snacks, and plenty of fluids for the event. Having the right clothing and equipment can quite literally be a lifesaver if conditions are bad, but even in less extreme weather, it can mean the difference between having an enjoyable or a miserable day out in the hills. Please bring a head torch, with enough charge.
