Cawfields Quarry

A most interesting circular walk which starts in the Roman era and takes in a lovely stretch of Hadrians Wall  but then shows how 18th and 19th century industrialisation transformed the area.

We start from the National Park car park at Cawfields and walk east, taking in the quarry and its lake , passed Milecastle 42. We might be lucky and get great 360 degree views  from our high vantage point. The walk turns south across undulating fells and we work our way towards Haltwhistle and the southern end of its namesake burn. The walk returns to Cawfields using the burn as its handrail, passing heritage all along the way, so much to see.

Dress for changeable weather and wear suitable footwear. Bring a packed lunch, snacks and a drink for the break.

Please note that due to continued wet weather in the county, parts of this walk will be on wet ground.
We have diverted the route to avoid the areas affected the most but for your comfort on the walk, we would recommend walking boots with high ankle support and gaiters if you have them.

Dogs are not permitted at this event.
